We know that when you are moving home there is so much to take care of, and not a great amount of time to complete your House Move. Generally you only have a few months to prepare when Moving Home. You have to move what has been accumulated over years, and you only have a couple of days to move.

Where do you start in planning to move house?

Yes, it can even be fun moving house (only if you have the time for fun). Going through all the items you have collected over years, reminiscing about where you got them from and what they mean to you – however, this may take a long time for some people.

So how do you start?

With a pen and and some paper ! !

First things first, you need to know what has to be moved.
Take a page per room in the house, garage and garden. Go to each room listing all the furniture to be moved (making note what furniture needs to be dismantled).
Estimate how many boxes will be required per room, and what packing material you need per room.
Make a note of all Fragile Items which need to be packed.
Make a note about the access for a House Removal Lorry
In each room, make a note if you want to do the packing or do you want the professionals to do the packing. Some rooms are easier to pack than others.

Sole use containers - Once the container is loaded then it is transported to the port, where it will be loaded onto the next available vessel, a much quicker service - usually taking 2 to 3 weeks port to port. There is a weekly service for FCL’s.

Onward Delivery from Port to Door - once your items have cleared customs then your items, may be collected from customs by yourself, or arrangements can be made with a local Cyprus Removal Company for onward delivery to your new home in Cyprus.

**Transit times do vary depending on customs or immigration delays, weather conditions, time of year and the volumes being shipped.

When Moving House, there are 2 ways to move. . . the "Stressful Way" or the "Organised Way".

Moving Home is recognised as one of the most stressful events in your life. You have to make arrangements for all your household effects to be collected from one house and moved to your new home.

Do you do it yourself or employ a Professional House Removals Company to do it for you?
Who do you chose to move your household effects?
How do you know the company are reputable - you hear so many horror stories these days about Removal Companies?
You have to cancel and change all your amenities - spending ages on the telephone to suppliers, you may be changing jobs, changing your children's schools, deal with Estate Agents, Buyers, Solicitors and all other parties involved in the House Buying Process. Provide all necessary paperwork to aid the purchase or sale. Have meetings with the Bank, the Solicitors, Estate Agents.

You may be juggling arrangements around your work, or whilst at home looking after the family. There is so much to do - and usually only 1 - 2 months to get it all done.

So how can you make the whole process as easy as possible?

Get Organised - and Start Right Away ?

There is a lot to consider when Moving Home. So where should you start? Grab a pen and paper and go on a tour of your home. . . .

Make a full list of items which are to be moved. Go room by room - make notes about any furniture which requires dismantling, any furniture which needs wrapping. Count the number of cupboards which need to be packed.
Whilst looking around your home decide - if you are going to throw out any items, or donate to charity - do not add them to the list.
Check your loft / garage / cellar / shed - do you need to clear out items which you have not used in ages.
Once you have compiled your list - decide which rooms your furniture will go into the new home. Then transfer the list onto a spreadsheet on your PC.
Decide if you have the time or inclination to Pack your Home Yourself? Packing is probably the most important part of the house move - poorly packed items may get damaged during your move.
How many boxes do you require? Not easy to calculate - best to buy more than not have enough.
What Packing Materials do you need? Where do you buy it from?
Do you have any Valuable Items which needs Special Care and Attention
How big a vehicle do you think you will need?
How many men or friends do you think will be needed? (if you are using a removal company then they will advise you of the best option for 6, 8 and 9.
Are there any access issues Did all your furniture get into your home OK? Where doors removed? Windows taken out? Did you build furniture in your home? Will it need to be dismantled? Can you do it, or do you need help?
There is a lot to take in initially, but once you have your list, then you can start to work out the answers to the questions. . .

We have recently completed the house move for Lily Allen and her partner Sam. The move was from Central London, a 3rd & 4th Floor apartment with a roof terrace to her Country House in the Cotswolds.

The Removals was completed over 2 days, using a team of 6 men.

A Full Fragile Pack Service was offered, and all furniture bubble blanket wrapped for maximum protection during the move. At the new home all Fragile Packed items are Unpacked and checked, along with the Unwrapping of Wrapped Furniture and disposal of all materials.

We provided an Unmarked 17.5 tonne lorry, this was to provide discretion on the day. For our clientele who do not want a sign written lorry turning up outside their home on the day of the move. Especially if they do not want to alert the media.

We do not advise the moving team who the client is until the day, to ensure that there can be no leaks to the press to allow for a less stressful move for our client.

A Guide to Export Wrapping & Packing

If you decide to pack your own household effects when moving home within the UK or Moving Overseas, then there are a number of factors to be taken into consideration about Owner Packed Moves.

Firstly, any boxes packed by the owner are not insured for damage.

Secondly, you have to pack your items securely in the boxes to ensure that they do not get damaged during the move. Whilst in a vehicle, although the boxes will be secured the vehicle will be moving up and down on roads and bumpy surfaces, and if shipping overseas then by the sea. If the contents are not packed tightly then damage may occur.

Thirdly, the weight of the boxes – if you are packing boxes you have to consider the size of the box and what the contents are going into the boxes. Each box should weigh no more than 30kgs, which is manageable by 1 man to carry.

All furniture should be packed and covered during transit to prevent damage and dirt ingress.

Brief guide on how to wrap and pack larger items

Sofas

Sofas, should be in protective sofa covers, or wrapped in bubble blanket

Beds

All beds must be dismantled and all pieces wrapped. Mattresses should be in mattress bags with the bases entirely wrapped.

Furniture

Furniture should be wrapped in export wrap quality bubble blankets, avoid using bubble wrap on polished or wooden surfaces as it can sweat due to climate change and condensation, water droplets form underneath and in some cases cause marks to your furniture (if covered for a period of time). Corners should be protected by using cardboard or corner protectors.

Electronics

Ideally electronic equipment should be transported in its original boxes. However, if they are not available then they should be packed in strong good quality boxes with plenty of cushioning materials. You can buy special boxes for TV’s, & PC’s

Kitchen Appliances

All appliances should be clean and dry – avoid using for at least 2 days prior to the move to allow for the insides to dry out, this will prevent the appliances from smelling after a period of time if not dry. Fridges should be cleaned inside. Freezers thawed out and dried thoroughly to prevent mould growth. All items should be wrapped to prevent scratching with either export wrap or removal blankets. If items are to be stored for a period of time then place silica gel inside.

Clothing

You can pack your clothes in suitcases, or buy wardrobe cartons for your hanging clothes.

China & Glassware

They should be packed in strong boxes, write ‘FRAGILE’ on each box – it is recommended not to seal the boxes and place your packed boxes to one side and ask the movers to check the boxes to ensure they have been packed properly. Firstly, crumple up lots of paper and make a base in the box. Each item should be individually wrapped in packing paper (do not wrap a whole stack together as this will cause damage) so wrap each item in paper, and pack the box out with crumpled newspaper / packing paper to ensure that there is no movement in the box. If a box is packed properly and dropped then the contents should not get damaged.

Boxes

The boxes should be strong and double walled. Do not cut corners by buying cheaper single walled as they are not strong enough, and the contents are more likely going to get damaged. Use good quality PVC parcel tape which will secure the box and hold it together.

Pictures

Picture boxes are available in all different sizes. If the pictures are to be stored or transported over a long distance, avoid bubble wrap as if any moisture gets in, this will cause damage to your picture, use a quality bubble blanket, or export wrap paper. If the pictures have a glass frame then mark ‘GLASS FRAGILE’

Inventory / Customs Requirements

It is important for you to know the custom’s requirements prior to packing your boxes, to ensure no restricted items are packed.

All shipments must be accompanied by an inventory; this is to ensure that the correct numbers of boxes are checked onto the vehicle and into your new home.

If Domestic UK Move - then all boxes should be numbered and an inventory of furniture should be written prior to loading, then when being unloaded should be checked off.

For all Overseas Moves, all boxes should be numbered and an inventory of furniture should be written and a copy passed to the movers. The inventory should state what the contents of each box is ‘Kitchen contents’ – no need to individually list each item in the box.

Packing Service

If all this seems too much for you then a Packing Service can be provided at an additional cost. Once professionally packed, your items will be insured for the duration of the move, up to your chosen level of cover. (Conditions apply).

Just had our first shipment to Jamaica. This was a customer we moved last year from Manchester to London, now emigrating back home to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Quite complicated Move, some items needed air freight and the rest by sea freight. All collected - even though advised customer air freight limit per box is 30kg, however when weighed was 68kg. A bit more expensive but still collected and ready to fly.

3 Years ago today. Movingeverywhere was set up.

The business was set up originally in Birmingham, which was a good central point in the UK with good access for both the North and South of the UK.

After a year, I decided to Move up to Manchester, where I reside and work.

In the early days, we were conducting the majority of the moves, up and down the country - moving customers from all parts of the UK. This was the most important time of the business. Prior to this business, I had little experience of the house removals industry. (Previously a Bank Manager). The split was moving about 60% of the moves, and brokering the remaining 40%.

In the last few years I have been fortunate to work with some excellent removal companies, from the small removal company to the international removal companies, my split has now changed to 20% of moves done by us, and the other 80% other companies. Working together to provide an excellent service to our customers.

We work with some of the largest Removal Companies in the UK, to allow us to fully cater for all types of house moves.

This has freed up my time, to allow me to focus on looking after the customer. Since setting up the business, a feedback form is issued to all customer and to date we have had many great testimonials and yes some dissatisfied customers, only 2% of our customers over 3 years have been in contact to express dissatisfaction with the service received. All have been resolved, with no insurance claims being raised.

Last year, I started working with a small courier company who wanted to get into House Removals, I work alongside them training them to do moves, ensuring they have the correct materials, great attitude when with my customers, and that the do the job properly - YTD they have done over 70 moves with only 3 minor complaints from customers (all resolved) which in their first year is very good. Over the next year I will continue to work closely with this company.

Whilst doing the moves, I learn't what customer's wanted when moving and what was required to move a customer's home. In the early days a few mistakes were made (like using too small a vehicle, not taking into account traffic conditions - working all the hours to get the move done - even finishing sometimes in the early hours), placing demands on the mover's which was unnecessary to get the job done.

With time, comes experience, and Quality improves.

I still have physical hands on involvement with the majority of moves, visiting the customer's home, conducting home visits, preparing the house for the moves. Assisting the customer's in whatever they need for their house move. I then let the movers load, deliver and unload - and being on call if any issues should arise.
All my customer's are given my mobile number, I am available from 9am - 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

On the day of the move, I want the mover's to be communicative with the customer, even have some banter - "after all, moving for a customer is stressful, if the movers are having fun then this eases the customers stress - and that is extremely important when moving a customer" When movers act like robot's the customer can feel intimidated.

My attitude within my business, is that I have to look after my customers to ensure that the move is done efficiently, professionally and that they are happy with the move, and will return the next time they move.

I am in the process of setting up a great referral scheme, offering track days and pampering sessions to customers who refer family and friends to Movingeverywhere

Over the coming year, I am going to increase my focus on Storage (particularly in the North West), developing more Overseas Moves, offering Packing Materials for both Purchase and Loan.

Why Not To Use a Man and Van Service When Moving Home

Yesterday my guys were conducting a local house move in Manchester, moving a 2 bed house from Old Trafford to Prestwich (6 miles). Our customer was selling and buying the same day so just had to got through the usual rigmarole of dealing with the solicitors, awaiting money to transfer and that completion phone call.

They started at 9.30am, as expected to load by 12pm, then 20 mins to arrive which will get us to the new home just before the key release.

All went well, the vehicle loaded, then drive to the new property. . "Oh dear"!. When they arrived the owner was still packing. The sale had not completed so OK he can still be packing. I visited the property to see what was going on.

Asked where the vehicle was - it had been on it's 2nd trip. (Crikey! I thought they must have a lot of furniture - until the vehicle arrived. . I could not stop laughing, my guys were in hysterics. It was an LDV Transit Van and not a pretty one at that (photos).

So while the 2 men were loading the LDV (I had to take pics, as they did not have professional transit blankets, but had a quilt, a duvet, and some bed sheets (I am not kidding) The sofa was just put in with no covers, with boxes stacked to pack it in. (photo)

They then trundled off to Ramsbottom (13 miles) which was taking 2 hours per trip. Whilst they were gone, 'our customers' got the phone call that the sale had completed.

I explained to my customer that the house was not empty - which caused her stress, so she had to contact her solicitors to advise them that the movers could not unload and had to wait whilst the old owner emptied the house. As they were not ready then we are entitled to charge a key waiting fee (which the solicitor is looking to deduct from the seller of the property she moved in to)

The old owner was not a fit bloke, he had a heart attack last year, we did help move some of the furniture out of the house. He and a lady started moving the furniture out of the house and on to the pavement (pics) then the skies opened and started to rain. We covered his furniture on the pavement with sheeting to help him out.

As he lifted a box, he hit himself in the nose, cutting his nose, blood pouring down his face, at one point he had to sit down, whilst his partner got him a lucozade. I could see he was getting more stressed which is not good for his health condition, so he had to take a rest for a while.

We started to unload the vehicle 2.5 hours after we arrived, and finished the unloading at 4pm (we even had a coffee break and a chat with our customer) all was good for our team. During the time it took us to load, the other man & van had done 1 return trip.

They had arrived for their 4th trip just as we were leaving.

I offered our vehicle and service to the customer, but he was not prepared to pay us our rates - so we left. There was still a pavement full of furniture and a shed full of items. I can not imagine what time they finished the move with the Man & Van service.

I am posting this as a potential warning to all customer's who chose to use a Man & Van Service, instead of a "Professional House Removals Company".

That man wanted to cut corner's and get a cheap move, I found out that they were charging £50.00 per load, I estimated 8 loads in there little Transit Van. We charged our customer a bit less than this, but she was moved in, having a coffee and an evening meal - while he was having to have all his furniture sat out on the pavement all evening while the LDV was going back and forth.

The nicest part of the move was when she told me "that we had kept the whole move light hearted, had some banter, and did not add to the stress of the buying process"

In the long run, gong cheap with your house removals team is false economy - and will cause all parties involved unnecessary stress during what is already a stressful Moving Day.

I am sure he thought he was doing the right thing, I am sure when the Man & Van went to see the house, they did not mention 8 trips, or furniture on the pavement, "I can't comment any more than that as was not privy to the sales pitch"

Snow Conditions - Why are the roads not prepared?

7am on a Sunday morning, had 2 vehicles arrive to a customers house in Manchester for a move to Bristol. Not a gritter or snow plough in site? Have seen more police cars and ambulances this morning already. . . Poor planning puts a strain on resources.

Why can the councils not get it right? OK it was raining last night, so could not grit, but could they not have got on the roads as soon as the snow started to fall. All the snow has done is covered the icy roads hiding the hidden danger? How many accidents will occur, which surely must have been preventable.

Due to this we now have a fully loaded lorry in Manchester, we tried the M6 but down to 1 lane!! Yes 1 lane! So pulled over and can not complete the move. It is a good job that we have understanding customers, and we pre-planned the house removal

Will complete the house removal in the morning, good job tomorrow was the completion date and today we just wanted to be prepared - just in case. Forward planning when conducting house removals is always the most important thing.

So thanks to the council - we are stacked up and now a day behind. We are only one business, how much more businesses are going to be affected over the next few days. . We live in a country which snows each year, but still they do not get it right. . .

How can the Ski resorts do it so well, and UK stops??? Should send some councillors overseas to learn how to do things properly.

With So much to do in the weeks leading up to your house move, it is now time to get really organised. 2 to 3 weeks before you move is when you need to be making arrangements to change your utilities. Most Utility providers need this time to get your utililties switched - especially Broadband companies.

The main thing to do is Start Packing - So many people leave this until the last minute and end up not packing properly which is when damage may occur. Its best to start sooner - packing the items you rarely use.

"Moving House with Minimum Stress is about being Organised"

Moving Tip 1: Arrange for meter readings and service disconnection/connection. Contact your essential service providers and notify them of your move. You may need to arrange for water, gas and electricity readings at your present home on the day of your move. You also need to make sure that all the services at your new home are connected on the day you move in.

Moving Tip 2: Transfer your phone number. Have your telephone number transferred (or changed if necessary) and arrange for your final bill to be sent to your new home.

Use this as a reminder to start drawing up a list of people who will need to know your new info. Also, for a modest fee, your phone company should be able to provide a redirection message on your old number.

Moving Tip 3: Get advice on aerials/satellite dishes. – It is possible that your TV/FM aerials and/or satellite dish will not be suitable in the area you are moving to. Do get specialist advice, but it is often cheaper for you to leave them behind and have new equipment installed at your new home.

Moving Tip 4: Arrange for your post to be redirected. Contact Royal Mail if you want to have your post redirected to your new home. They need at least five working days notice to arrange the service and you can have post redirected for between one month and two years. If you are moving overseas you may wish to set up a post office box – again Royal Mail can do this for you.

Moving Tip 5: Organise the disconnection and reconnection of domestic appliances. Arrange for a qualified plumber, electrician or gas fitter to disconnect your appliances (washing machine, cooker, gas fires etc) in your present home and someone to reconnect them in your new home. Do not try to do this yourself.

Moving Tip 6: Check that your Internet Service Provider is available in your new area. Visit their website or call customer services, to check that you can transfer to your new address. If they are not servicing your new area then you will need to request a MAC code, to pass on to your new Internet Service Provider.

If you feel that you will be unable to pack all your household contents in time for the day of your move, then contact your house removals company and request a removals quote to include the packing service.

When moving home there is so much for you and your family to do. Sometimes you have plenty of time to get organised knowing months in advance about your house move. In some circumstances you only have weeks or even days.

At Movingeverywhere we have conducted hundreds of house removals and helped customers get organised in preperation of the move. Its what we do every day.

"A prepared house move is a less stressful one"

The 8 tips below are ideally prepared and actioned 2 to 3 weeks before your move, I am sure there are many more tips

(please feel free to add any tips you have had onto the comments for others to read - much appreciated)

Moving Tip 1: If you have children, arrange childcare for your moving day. Older children may well want to be involved in your house move, but it could be a long day for the younger ones. Give them, and yourself, a break.

Moving Tip 2: Make arrangements for moving your pets. Moving house can be very disruptive for pets so you may want to ask your vet for specialist advice. On moving day itself, it’s a good idea to leave them with family or friends – especially big dogs. Some big dogs don’t seem to like big removals men.

Moving Tip 3: Have a good clear out. A new home is the perfect time for a new start and there’s no point in moving your unwanted belongings with you. Organise a clear out a few weeks before your move.

Local charities will be happy to receive unwanted clothing and other items in good condition. Contact your council if there is anything bulky that you want to recycle. You could also consider a car boot sale or small ads in your local paper to help clear some clutter - or have a flutter on the modern car boot equivalent, eBay.

Moving Tip 4: Start emptying your freezer. Bet you didn’t think of that one. Moving a freezer that has not been defrosted can actually damage the freezer. Plan a ‘freezer party’ to use up frozen goods before your move.

Moving Tip 5: Order Your Boxes. If you’re doing your own packing now is the time to order (or scrounge) packing boxes. Contact us directly to arrange this for you – or to arrange a house packing service.

Moving Tip 6: Get Packing. If you are doing your own packing you’ll want to get started it can take quite a while to pack your own house, especially when you have other things to do.

Moving Tip 7: Label your boxes. When packing - write on the outside of each box what room the contents belong to, also add your surname / new house number & postcode. If packing boxes for moving overseas move then you will need to make an itemized list for each box (place the list inside the box) this will be required for customs clearance of your items.

Moving Tip 8: Fragile packing your items. If you are packing yourself, then any box which has fragile / breakable items then please mark these boxes and place to one side. When our moving team arrives they will check the contents to ensure that they are suitably packed, to ensure that when transported no breakages may occur. Please be advised that all owner packed items are not covered by goods in transit liability insurance. You will need to make your own insurance arrangements for the contents you have packed. Most Home contents have an exclusion about owner packed items, they will usually only cover your breakable and fragile items if they have been packed and certified by Professional Packers. We do offer a full packing service and fragile pack service to cover your items whilst in transit under our liability insurance.

Please Read before paying a Courier Company to do your House Removals

Movingeverywhere had a consignment of boxes and furniture to move last week in Manchester.

I want to share the experience I had with the company we contracted to conduct the move.

We were recommended a company to use in Manchester who advertise as being a Courier / Removals company. On their website they had an image of a Luton vehicle, ok it was a stock purchased photo from the internet but still it gave the impression of them being a proper removal company.

We are always looking to develop our removal company network. Our procedures are to ensure that the removal companies we use will conduct the house moves to the standards which our customers expect from us.

We will check the type of vehicle they operate, do they use blankets, straps, and protective covers? Do they have Goods in Transit insurance? Public Liability and are references available?

The company I spoke to confirmed all of the above to my satisfaction on the phone. As they were local I arranged to conduct the move with them, so I can meet them and quality check the vehicle and the standard of the service they were offering. This is to protect our customers.

I arrived to meet them on the day outside the property, they were on time. My first impression was the vehicle was OK it had added security locks which was impressive. He was wearing a casual pair of trousers, and some kickers? Not exactly professional removal companies clothing.

When he opened the back of the vehicle the van was empty - no blankets, no straps or anything to protect the customers items. When asked why no blankets he said that he did not use them for moving house furniture. We then drove back to my office to collect our blankets, straps and furniture covers.

I then asked to see the insurance documents which I read. The company did have Goods in Transit Insurance cover up to £10,000. However, when reading more this was for courier work only. There were no allowances for furniture removing. (My next blog will be about this issue)

As a removal company Movingeverywhere has a £20,000 Goods in Transit liability policy for Furniture Removers.

As I was present this move continued under my supervision and on our insurance policy.

During the move it showed that they did not have the flair for moving furniture. When faced with an oversized sofa the first thing they said was this is too big and will not fit out the door - which I deem as very negative thing to say in front of a customer and does not install confidence, the customer relies on the expertese of the company.

Me being positive politely said "shut up" "as can not say you can not do something without trying"

The sofa did fit, and was placed in the new home to the customers satisfaction, it was difficult but it was done. During the move I was watching them and also listening to the negative comments and watching the customer's expressions which he was getting a bit annoyed, so in the end the customer just ignored him and communicated direct with me.

I am not going to mention the companies name, I will not be using them again.

The purpose of this blog is to make people aware of courier companys advertising as a removal company and not having the skill, the right equipment and tools or the right insurances to conduct a move.

There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of courier companies in the UK who will collect furniture and they may not hold the right insurance.

They advertise cheaply, enticing customers who go for them. When in fact furniture should only be moved by professional furniture removers. Furniture costs hundreds if not thousands of pounds - left in possession with someone charging £15.00 per hour to collect and deliver?

Had I not checked up on them, then the move would have happened with no blankets, an unskilled team and also no insurance, so no doubt damage would have occured - what would have happened then.

Customers are using these companies as they are cheap!! I will leave you with a thought . . .

How to Make Your House Move Go Smoothly

A House Removal Company has a responsibility to the customer to act in a manner on the move day to help make your move go as smoothly as possible.

Shown below are some helpful house moving tips to help prepare for your move and avoid unnecessary mistakes

1. Check the Removal Company, prior to booking your house move

The internet is an excellent way for customers to research removal companies, the internet provides both testimonials and also poor reviews from disgruntled customers'.

When booking your move how professional is the booking process?

Does the company send a booking confirmation, to confirm what work is to be carried out?
Do they provide your with their Terms & Conditions?
Do they fully explain how the insurance works?
Do they provide an invoice?
Do you get a receipt for your payments?
Have they provided you with a address & telephone number along with a valid mobile phone number so you can contact the movers on the day?
Does the removal company keep in contact with you, are are available if you need help & advice?

You are paying for a service, and you should get what you pay for, at Movingeverywhere we have a very thorough and professional booking process, we also have an excellent Customer Relationship Programme in place so we can keep in contact with our customers and manage their house moving process.

2. Has the cost of your move been properly explained, if there are possible additional costs have they been explained and put in writing?

Have you had a written quote? Does the quote match up with the Invoice and booking confirmations? If there are additional charges for dismantling items have these been agreed and fully explained. Have payment terms been agreed in advance of the move.

3. Has the Removal Company explained which vehicle is to be used, and if any special tools or equipment are required?

Prior to the move the company should tell you the size of the vehicle to be used, the number of men for the move, and also if any tools are required (eg. lifting gear, tools for dismantling, etc). Are you happy with the arrangements. Does the company have blankets for your furniture, do they provide covers?

Many Man & Van companies, double up as couriers, some do not even use blankets in the back of the vehicle. Movingeverywhere uses blankets, trolleys and covers for their moves. The items we move, do not belong to us so we have look after the items entrusted in us.

4. Book you house removal at least 3 weeks before your moving day

If possible once you know you are moving, that is the time to start enquiring about your House Removal. Most companies can ot provide an accurate quote months in advance, but shouldbe able to provide you with an estimate for your move. This will help with your budget.

Ideally book your move as soon as possible, this will take away worry from you, and also the panic associated with leaving it until the last minute. Also the closer to the moving date you leave it the higher the cost may be.

Better arrangents can be made when there has been lots of notice.

Movingeverywhere can arrange short notice moves usually with 48 hours notice, but we always like as much notice as possible

5. If you are packing yourself then do it as soon as possible.

If you leave packing until the last minute more often than not the packing will be rushed, you may not have time to pack things properly, this is when things get damaged. Also, on the day of the moveif you have not packed and the movers have finished loading then this will hold up the move, and the movers may charge for the wait, they may have to help with the packing or dismantling of furniture, inwhich they may charge extra.

If you think you will not have time to finish the packing or the inclination to finish the packing, then advise the Removal Company in advance and they will gladly quote you to complete the packing.

If you have packed Fragile items then it is advisable to tell the movers which boxes are fragile packed. It may be a good idea to ask the movers to check the packing before they load the boxes.

6. Do doors or windows need to be removed to get furniture out, have you arranged parking?

Have you checked the access, have you booked a glazier to remove windows if required? Has furniture been dismantled if too large to get out of the house. Has parking been arranged? Councils need 7 days to arrange parking suspensions. If parking has not been arranged and the removal company has to park down the road, then this will increase the time it takes to complete the move and may charge extra.

7. Confirm the move a week before and also 2 days before the move?

The removal company should keep in contact with you prior to the move. By having a good customer service process in place this puts your mind at ease leading up to your move. I am sure there is nothing worse than not hearing from the removal company before the move, then waiting outside on the morning of the move waiting to see if they turn up.

We always speak to our customers the week before the move and also 2 days prior to the move to confirm the move and also to ensure the customers' move is still going ahead as scheduled.

Caution when using some CHEAP Man & Van services.

Providing information to people moving home is important. We move people every day, most people move once every 2 to 3 years. We understand the risks associated with moving home.

We know that we won't get every customer to use our service. It would be nice but unrealistic.

We know that many people are struggling to meet the cost of moving home - especially in times of economic downturn. Many people are forced to make their decision to find a removal company based on cost, and cost alone.

Many people moving home can not afford to pay the cost of a professional removal company, and are lured by advert's like " £15.00 per hour Man & Van Service ". Now the vast majority of these companies are legitimate and, simply a man and a van who are hardworking and happy to keep busy and earn a fair days wage.

We all like to save money, but sometimes saving money can cost a lot more in the long run.

Let me explain, it's logical that to get a good job done these days mean's paying a good price.

Companies offering cheap removal services should be approached with caution. There is a reason why they do not charge more than £15.00 per hour. A good removal companies rate start at £40.00 per hour for their services for 2 men and a vehicle plus fuel cost and additional expenses.

Always ask "what size is your van? Will all the items fit without being overloaded? Do you provide blankets and straps to protect my furniture?"

Many cheap removal companies operate a van which on average holds approx 350 - 400 cu ft. They will often attempt to conduct larger moves and have multiple trips. Often the van is overloaded and by the time the van is at the destination, some items of furniture may have been knocked and damaged. Some items of furniture may have to be laid flat because their is not enough roof clearance, ie wardrobes, this will weaken them. As the move now involves multiple trips the length of time increases thus costing you more.

Always ask "What is your home/business address? What is your landline telephone number? Can I have a copy of your driving licence? Do you have testimonials or recommendations?"

Would you let a couple of unknown men to arrive, in maybe an un-signaged van and collect your items and then drive off without asking for ID? Or having a telephone number to ring them on, or have an address to contact them if something goes wrong. Also write down the make, model and registration number of the van. This does happen and there have been many reports to the police of customers items being stolen by removal companies.

This is most important to differentiate from a legitimate company and the unreliable, unprofessional Man & Van company. when on the phone ask them for all the above information. A genuine company will gladly provide you with this information. If they are not forthecoming then end the call and maybe contact Trading Standards so they may investigate the company, which may prevent another unsuspecting victim of moving house scams.

A known scam about the size of your move

Some companies may chose not to get a full inventory prior to the move, they have a brief discussion and agree a price for the move, this is often a low quote - to acquire the business. Once the vehicle arrives and the vehicle is loaded, then the movers will then advise the move is larger than quoted and will increase the quote for the move, which is allowable - but unprofessional. You have 2 options, the first to tell them to unload the vehicle and get another company to move you which will cost you more, or pay them the extra money to deliver your items, you can find information about these scams on the internet.

When booking your move, a good company will either visit your home for a survey, or they will ask you to complete a Self Certification Survey Form the survey form allows the removal company to reduce the cost of paying for a surveyor to visit every customer when moving home. If a surveyor goes to every home then his wage has to be paid for by the customers who are moving, thus making the move more expensive. In today's time of technology more customer's are happy to book and arrange their move over the phone.

Reliability of Man & Van Service

With many people losing their jobs in the UK, there has been a small increase in the number of man & van / courier services being established. It's easy to set up an advertise, but without experience. Moving homes it actually a very skilled service to offer.

A good removal companyhave staff who are multi-skilled to do many tasks for you when moving home. Dismantling & reassembling furniture, packing your household contents, handling heavy or large items, handling fragile and valuable items with care, good customer care, patience, professionalism, and above all honest and trustworthy.

Once you book a man & van it does not mean they will turn up. Sometimes, and it does happen, if they get a better offer on the day then it is common for them to cancel your move and do the better paid move. leaving you all ready with no one to move you. You then have to get a company to move you either the same day or the next = Expensive!!

I know I run a removal company, so I will try and be as unbiased as possible. Firstly, not everyone needs to hire a professional house removals company.

Making the decision between DIY moves and hiring a Professional House Removals Company, is not an easy decision to make.

Most people chose DIY moves for local moves within the UK, generally DIY moves are not suitable for long distance or overseas removals.

To help with your decision, you first need to be clear about your priorities. Most people immediately decide based on money and time.

With many DIY moves this may be false economy.

Let me explain, you have to hire a vehicle and pay an deposit, you may not have the right size vehicle which will take longer to move, resulting in additional hire costs. Driving and manouvering a van or lorry is not easy, if you have an accident you are liable for the excess, and you will lose your deposit, which most companies charge £250.00. If you are doing a long distance move, you will have to either return the vehicle to the pick up destination, then drive back to your new home which doubles your journey and fuel bill, or pay for a one way hire - which depends on distance.

It takes the professionals a day to move an average size house, to the inexperienced this can take a couple of days, most house contents policies will only cover your items if moved by a professional house removals company, this reduces the insurance companies risk by putting in this provision. If you bump walls, or smash furniture then your insurance may not pay out and you will have to pay to replace your own items. Alternatively, if you claim of your own insurance your premiums will go up, and you will have to pay an excess.

What happens if you happen to lift your sofa and fall and injure yourself. Then you are off work and you may lose income.

Why shouldn't you use a House Removals company?

If you are fit and strong, if you have experience of driving vans or lorries, if you have friends to help, if you are patient and don't easily get stressed, if you have the time to do it yourself, if you don't have alot of items to move, if you don't mind the risk of damaging your furniture - then probably best to Do it Yourself. Over the next few weeks I will be updating this blog with information which will help customers who are planing to move "get organised".

This will not only help you reduce stress by getting organised, but it will help the movers on the day to provide you with a more efficient move.

On experience the main issues occur on the move day due to customer's not being fully prepared for the move.

Our house removal companies have conducted hundreds of house moves. The principles of a move are always the same.

"The house removals team arrives, they load the vehicle - securing and protecting your items, they travel to your new home, they unload your contents, then they leave you to organise your new home".

Its customers preperation which often causes delays and issues on the day.

For example

The original Movingeverywhere.co.uk site served its purpose for the last year, and has been popular with customers who were moving house and looking for Quality and Reliable House Removals Companies in the UK.

A new website needed to be designed, which was developed more out of need to have a clearer website, which is easier to navigate, and to provide information to our customers who are moving home and allow them to be able to quickly navigate to our House Removals Quick Quote, form to obtain a Removals Quote, without being bogged down with having to answer many questions which are irrelevant to the house moving process.

The image of the new website has been improved and reflects the professional approach we have to helping our customers throughout the whole house moving cycle.
